Muguruza sprints past Cirstea, into second week

LONDON, Great Britian - Former finalist Garbiñe Muguruza sprinted into the second week with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Romania's Sorana Cirstea at Wimbledon on Saturday.

For the second straight match, the Spaniard did not drop serve in the 70-minute win - in three matches, she's dropped a total of just 16 games en route to the second week.

Former finalist Garbiñe Muguruza hasn't lost a set in three matches en route to the second week at Wimbledon.
"I'm feeling pretty good. I felt today I improve a little bit my game compared to the previous matches," Muguruza said after her third round. "I'm happy the way I'm, you know, playing out there. It's not easy. I'm working hard. I'm kind of doing what I'm working on.

"It's great obviously to reach the second week. That's everybody's goal, to go through the first week, the first matches, then the exciting part comes now in a way."

Thought both players struck 18 winners in the match, Muguruza's consistency in aggression is what won out on the afternoon. She matched her winner total to just 10 unforced errors - just five in each set - while Cirstea accumulated a total of 17.

The two sets unfolded in identical fashion for the No.14 seed, as a break in the third game put her ahead 2-1 in each set. The Spaniard then added her insurance break in the fifth game of set set - but in contrasting fashion.

In the opener, Muguruza rolled to a love break to lead 4-1, but did not earn her insurance until her eighth opportunity in the second set - the Romanian dug out of a 0-40 hole, saving a total of seven break points in the longest game of the match, but was unable to fend off the last chance.

The 2015 finalist lost in the second round of Wimbledon a year ago as the No.2 seed after winning her maiden Grand Slam at Roland Garros, but the World No.15 assesses that her relationship with the London lawns evolved since her breakthrough two years ago.

"I played more matches. I never feel that comfortable in grass. You know, every time I start the grass season, I'm like, 'How the hell I did that final?' This kind of feeling," she joked. "For sure, the experience I have now playing matches for sure helps me. But it's tough. Everybody knows it's tough.

"I think I have to, like, always concentrate on my game. I think if I take care of me, I do my, you know, stuff, I feel I can hurt a lot of players."
