Cignal shuts down Foton, cops bronze medal
Cignal used its vast experience to its advantage to register a masterful 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22 conquest of Foton in the classification match of the Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino Conference Tuesday night at the Muntinlupa Sports Center.
Battle-scarred veterans Rachel Anne Daquis, Cherry Vivas and Jovelyn Gonzaga delivered, anchoring the HD Spikers in the crucial stretch to cop the bronze medal.
It is somehow a good finish for Cignal, which copped the Invitational Conference crown last April and went on an extensive training in Japan in preparation for this flagship conference.
Although they lost to the Cargo Movers in the semifinals, the HD Spikers still salvaged some measure of pride as they came up with an emphatic performance in the first two sets before going for the kill in the fourth.
With the HD Spikers comfortably ahead, 21-14, off a sharp kill from Daquis, the Tornadoes crawled their way back and moved to within three, 19-22.
But Daquis delivered another kill before Vivas connected an ace to help the HD Spikers gain the match point, 24-19.
